California just found a new part of your car to micromanage: your replacement tires. Starting in 2029, Sacramento is legally mandating tire efficiency—and it’s going to change what you can buy, how much you pay, and how your car drives.
The California Energy Commission just unanimously approved the Replacement Tire Efficiency Program. Their goal? Force replacement tires to be just as energy-efficient as the rubber that comes on brand-new cars, theoretically saving fuel and cutting emissions.
